At least Smith had been brave enough to try. Sportsmen wondered why Cody, who was now known also as “The Colonel,” would not take a crack at the running deer. Perhaps, they assumed, he was afraid he would miss. And so, newspaper reporters hailed Oakley as the real champion of the Wild West. Indd 55 1/12/10 4:12:01 PM 56 Annie Oakley decided to ask Edison a strange question. She wondered if he had ever considered inventing an electric gun. Edison admitted he had not thought of that possibility, but maybe one day he would create one. Although he never invented an electric gun, Edison found other ways to help the Wild West. Several years later, he designed an electrical set that allowed the Wild West to perform at night. Edison also made Oakley into one of the world’s first movie stars.

Suddenly, the stranger came running toward her. “Fine! ” he shouted, as quoted in Annie Oakley. ” Much to Oakley’s surprise, this oddlooking man was Nate Salsbury, the business manager of the Wild West show. He was so impressed with Oakley’s performance that he hired her on the spot, without even consulting Cody first. According to Salsbury, a woman sharpshooter in the lineup would draw quite a crowd, especially a woman who could shoot as she did.
